In this book by Melissa Walker, join 11-year-old Joseph Morse who, at the invitation of his Aunt Kate, a marine biologist, travels one summer from his Georgia home to Barrow, Alaska - the most northern town in the US - to help care for the recently rescued polar bear pup, Delta.  Found floating on an ice floe and seemingly abandoned, Delta is only a few months old and comes to live at the Lab.  Together with his Aunt Kate, Joseph is soon immersed Arctic tundra life and caring for Delta.  A glossary of terms and various resource lists at the back of the book further educates young readers about the Arctic and direct them to websites where they too can jump in and make a difference in caring for our planet. Melissa Walker, PhD, has served as a professor of English and Women's Studies, an advocate for civil rights, and a national leader for wilderness preservation.  Her current commitment is to empower children to understand their place in the natural world and to discover how they can help save the environment.  Her previous books include Down from the Mountain; Reading the Environment; and Living on Wilderness Time: Two Hundred Days Alone in America's Wild Places.
