BREAKING NEWS!: THIS SHOW WILL BE BROADCAST ON KVOS TV FOUR TIMES DURING SEPTEMBER (dates to come)
Join us for The Chuckanut Radio Hour with Special Guest: Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, artist, and author & illustrator of The Little Hummingbird and Red: A Haida Manga
The Chuckanut Radio Hour is Village Books' monthly radio variety show which is recorded live and features live music, the poetry corner, author interviews, and an episode of "The Bellingham Bean." Guest authors have included Sherman Alexie, Garrison Keillor, JA Jance, and Garth Stein. This month, we are excited to welcome internationally renown artist, author, and illustrator, Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, who adeptly blends appealing imagery with complex social and environmental issues, calling upon his formal training in classic Haida design as well as contemporary influences. His work is multi-modal and he has created a new art form--Haida Manga. Join Us!
Kevin Murphy will join the Chuckanut Radio Hour as a permanent cast member with the August 19 show. He's a performance poet who has appeared on the show three times, most recently with the June show in Boundary Bay's Beer Garden. Kevin will perform both original work and the work of other poets.
Music for the August show will be provided by jazz vocalist Hadassah Norred. Throughout her high school years, Hadassah earned multiple honors in local and state competitions for solo piano performance, composition, and choral vocal music. She credits Tim Fitzpatrick and Justin Wisness as her most influential music teachers. Now Hadassah enjoys music in more relaxed environments. Most recently you may have seen her as the accompanist for Bellingham Theatre Guild's production of Guys and Dolls. She will be accompanied on piano by David post, owner and manager of Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth (BAAY) on State Street.
We ask that everyone be seated by 6:45pm for the 7pm recording.
About The Little Hummingbird
This inspiring children's book is based on a South American indigenous story about a courageous hummingbird who defies fear and expectations in her attempt to save the forest from fire. The illustrated story is supplemented by a natural and cultural history of hummingbirds, as well as an inspiring message from Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai. The evocative artwork by internationally renowned Haida artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas complements this optimistic tale that encourages everyone to take responsibility for their home and the planet.
About Red: A Haida Manga
Referencing a classic Haida oral narrative, this spectacular full-color graphic novel blends traditional Haida imagery with Japanese manga to tell the powerful story of Red, an orphaned leader so blinded by revenge that he leads his community to the brink of war and destruction. Tragic and timeless, Red's story is reminiscent of such classics as Macbeth and King Lear. Not only an affecting story, Red is an innovation in contemporary storytelling from the creator of Haida Manga and the author of "Flight of the Hummingbird;" it consists of 108 pages of hand-painted illustrations, and when arranged the panels create a Haida formline image 13 feet long. A miniature version of the panel in full-color is within the book.
About Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas
Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas is a very active player in a vibrant shift in the comfortably familiar world of Canada's iconic First Nations' art. After a career that spanned three decades of involvement in high-profile Haida political successes, Yahgulanaas decided to finally apply his formal training in classic Haida design. He takes from an extensive corpus of Haida narratives and transforms them into contemporary, accessible and socially relevant Art. Yahgulanaas invented a new genre of graphic narrative called Haida Manga - part Haida, part Asian, and all Michael - to combat the simplistic narratives perpetrated about Indigenous People of the Pacific Coast. He's telling another story altogether: of complex human beings struggling, loving and dreaming just like everyone else. Social and environmental issues continue to play a big role in his works and when blended with his passionate belief in the power of the small Yahgulanaas is clearly adeptly blending appealing imagery with contemporary issues.
