Russell, the great Western painter and sculptor, set out from Missouri for the Montana Territory in 1879, when he was 15. The free-spirited teen, given to skipping school, grew into an adventurous young man who rode and worked with horses daily and was eager to capture in his art what he saw and experienced, the rare spirit of the region.  Also a good storyteller, he eventually published his tales in magazines.

Lois V. Harris's fiction, nonfiction, and photography have appeared in children's magazines and the L.A. Times. The author of Mary Cassatt: Impressionist Painter, Harris is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and the Authors Guild.

Every Tuesday in August, Village Books will celebrate the breadth of expertise in area by offering our “Locals in the Know” series.  This diverse showcase is but a sampling of the expansive knowledge our neighbors possess, and is sure to spark some engaging summer conversations.
